The cover of the first edition is very similar to Ronin by Frank Miller, the story and the origin of turtles involves the same origin as that of Daredevil . The enemies of the turtles, the Foot Clan, may also have been inspired by another creation of Miller, The Hand (The Hand), a group of ninja murderers.
The first edition was announced prior to publication in a guide comic, which got lots of attention from fans of comic books, therefore, that the first printing of 3,000 copies was sold out immediately, and quickly increased their market value. It was assumed that the comic was going to be just a parody of one edition, but the sales success led to a series of sequels.
The comic book format was larger than the comics regularly, and remained in this size for the first editions. The success also led to increased popularity of black and white comics in the mid-80s, when other small publishers tried also draw anthropomorphic animals parodies hoping for quick profits. Most of them managed to sell at comic book stores in large quantities, but they could not be sold to readers, which led to the collapse of comic sales during 1986-1987.
Through the years the ninja turtles comics inspired four separate series and several alternative histories, culminating in the TMNT: Volume 4 in black and white, which began publication in 2001 and continues to date 2005; however, suffers from poor sales and little publicity.
Cartoons Archie owned the publishing rights to the comics based on the animated series 1987. These comic adventures, TMNT Adventures, stopped following the history of television after issue # 5 and developed their own arguments History . While the 1987 television series had much more humor, the incarnation of Archie comics were darker, more violent and exploring themes such as death, religious conflict issues and environmental problems. The Archie comic book series was published between 1988 and 1995.
Image Comics also released a series of action ninja turtles, known as Volume 3, after the disappearance of Volume 2 and before the release of Volume 4 Volume 3 was held in great abhorrence by fans, largely by mutilation of the main characters (Leonardo Rafael lost an arm and lost an eye). It has been taken out of continuity and is not canon. Volume 2, published by Mirage again, showed Baxter Stockman in a robotic body as the main villain and went on 13 full color editions.
Dan Berger wrote and drew a daily cartoon, it was published until its cancellation in December 1996 . At the peak of its popularity, was published in over 250 newspapers worldwide.
From June to December 2003 , was published a monthly comic by Dreamwave Productions , inspired by the animated series 2003, until it was canceled due to low sales. It was written by Peter David and illustrated by LeSean Thomas and the first three editions, which were only based on the TV series, the prospect of April O'Neil, Baxter Stockman and Casey Jones was shown instead of the point view of the turtles themselves.
